Discovery (Therapeutic Rec.) Parent Manual

Discover (Therapeutic Rec.) Summer Day Camp is a specially designed program aimed toward special needs kids ages 5 to adult. Our camp offers the opportunity to experience a camp atmosphere, learning new things, participating in fun activities, and making new friends. Well-trained counselors who have experience with various disabilities staff the Discovery (Therapeutic Rec.) Program. We look forward to having a fun summer with your child and will do what we can to make it an enjoyable experience for all involved.

Transportation Procedures For Children With Special Needs

  1. Any child who is able or can assist with transfer or be reasonably moved from a wheelchair, stroller, or special seating device should be moved to a child restraint system complying with FMVSS213 (Child Restraint Systems). Unoccupied wheelchair should also be secured to prevent it from being a dangerous projectile in the event of a stop or a crash.
  2. All children weighting less than 50lbs should be secured in an appropriate child restraint or safety vest meeting the requirements of FMVSS213.
  3. Child safety seats or safety vests must be secured to the bus seat in a manner prescribed and approved by the manufacturer of the safety device. The child restraint should not be secured on a school bus seat adjacent to an emergency exit.
  4. Occupied wheelchairs should be secured in a forward-facing position.
  5. Wheelchairs should be secured with fastening devices that are attached to the floor. Any occupied wheelchairs should be secured with a 4-point tie-down device.
  6. Lapboards and trays attached to the wheelchair should be removed before loading and be secured separately for transport.
  7. Three-wheeled, cart type units and other wheelchair or stroller-type devices are not permitted for occupied transport in a school bus unless impact test results indicate the device can be secured under impact loading conditions.
  8. All children will be checked on and off of the bus using a daily roster.
  9. The driver and assistant will check all children for safety belts and ensuring that safety seats are properly secured

  • Do not send possessions that can get lost such as good jewelry, toys, gameboys, etc.

T-Shirts

Your child will be receiving a special T-Shirt for summer camp. Please be sure to have your camper wear this shirt on our field trip days. This shirt will allow us to easily identify those in our group.

* Please be sure to list all medications that your child is currently taking on the enrollment sheet, even if we will not be administering the medications to them. In case of an emergency, we need to be able to give the paramedics and/or doctors all relevant information pertaining to your child.

A copy of your child's IEP from school is always welcome and will help the staff by keeping your child consistent in all areas of their lives. These forms will be kept locked up and information will stay confidential.

The more information you can give the staff about your child, the better the staff will be at caring for them. Please list any trouble areas, discipline techniques, and abilities that you think will help us with your child.
